Niger’s FIMA festival has been cancelled due to security fears. This follows the recent attacks in Paris and also in Mali, where 22 people were killed in a raid on a luxury hotel last week, couturier Alphadi said.

FIMA happens to be one of the biggest fashion shows in Africa as far as the francophone community is concerned. THe event sees over a 1,000 participants from designers to models to celebrities.

It is reported that Niger is battling the Nigerian-based jihadist group Boko Haram in the south-east of the country.

The last show in 2013 was organized under tight security due to fears of an attack by al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

Alphadi, founder and CEO of FIMA, said the four-day festival would take place “very soon”, without giving a date.
