It’ll be one-touch victory: Prez. Mahama
President John Mahama yesterday laid claim to a second term bid in office when he submitted his nomination forms at the National
Democratic Congress (NDC) headquarters to contest the party’s presidential slot, with a declaration to clinch a one-touch victory for the party in the 2016 general election.
He was accompanied to the office at Adabraka in Accra by a large number of party faithful.
Against the background of brass band music, Mr Mahama, who was dressed in an all-white attire, presented the completed nomination forms, together with a bank voucher for the GH¢50,000 nomination fee.
After submitting his forms, he said: “With all humility, I seek your mandate to represent the party in the 2016 election.”
He said the party had traditionally demonstrated a strong bond of unity between it and the government, given the support the party had continued to receive since its formation.
One-touch victory
“I will continue the great heritage of my predecessors in the persons of President J.J. Rawlings and Professor John Evans Atta Mills to ensure a one-touch victory, come 2016,” President Mahama said.
He said the party had an impressive track record in government, in spite of the challenges it faced, adding, “Our achievements have been impressive.”
He called on the rank and file of the party to close their ranks and go into Election 2016 with a united front to clinch yet another victory to continue the Better Ghana Agenda.
Only the President has picked forms so far
Receiving the forms, the General Secretary, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, reiterated an earlier position that only President Mahama had so far picked nomination forms to contest the presidential slot.
He added that no other person had picked forms from his office and, therefore, appealed to persons interested in contesting the presidential primary to come forward, as nomination closes on September 10, 2016.
He said presidential aspirants of the party would be vetted, if necessary, and also given copies of the party’s voters register.
He indicated that there would be no special delegates congress this year, having successfully undertaken a biometric registration of its members across the country.
The general secretary posited that the party’s regulations still required the election of a presidential candidate, even if a single person presented nomination forms by the deadline, and that delegates would be mobilised at all 6,000 polling stations to elect presidential and parliamentary candidates.
The First Vice-Chairman of the NDC, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, who examined the forms to certify their correctness, declared that they had, indeed, been endorsed by all 275 constituencies of the party and declared that “the President has satisfied all the requirements”.
Achievements
Addressing a mini-rally after the presentation, President Mahama described the NDC as the most successful political party in the Fourth Republic, for which reason Ghanaians had confidence in it and the government it formed.
Touching on the government’s achievements in various sectors of the economy, ranging from education to health, he averred that the NDC had undertaken a massive secondary education expansion programme.
He explained that more contracts would be awarded for construction of senior high schools next year to bring the number of day schools to 123.
On health, he said the government had improved the health front with the presentation of modern diagnosticequipment to public health institutions across the country.
He added that more hospitals were being built across the country to bring health delivery to the doorstep of the people.
Touching on infrastructure, President Mahama said there had been a massive investment in road and airport infrastructure.
